Our Commitment

The men and women of the Chowan County Sheriff’s Office are committed to providing a high quality of services to the citizens of Chowan County. Whether your first contact is with the Communications Center, the Detention Facility, or the Sheriff’s Office, we recognize our responsibility to maintain order, while giving respect to every individual. It is our goal to work with the citizenry to make our county a safer place to live, work, worship, visit, and enjoy.

Sheriff’s Office is a full-service law enforcement agency charged with enforcing the law, investigating crimes, apprehending criminals, providing custody and control of arrested persons through our detention facilities, serving the court system by service of civil and criminal process and furnishing court security. The Chowan County Sheriff’s Office consists of the Office of Sheriff and the following divisions which are overseen by Sheriff Basnight and Chief Deputy John McArthur:

  • 911 Emergency Communications

Chowan County is the smallest county in North Carolina with a total area of 147 square miles. Fifteen thousand citizens live here and depend on the Chowan County Sheriff’s Office for primary law enforcement services. We work closely with the Town of Edenton Police Department and all state law enforcement agencies to improve the quality of life for the citizens of Chowan County.
