K-9 Unit

K-9

The K-9 unit was started in 1998 with a grant from the Governor’s Crime Commission. The unit was pioneered by K-9 REX and handler W.C. (Buddy) Bunch.  After seven years of valiant service to the citizens of Chowan County, Rex retired.

In 2006 K-9 Rico and handler Edward (Scooter) Basnight began their tour of duty. Deputy Basnight is also a certified K-9 trainer.

In 2016 Deputy Anthony Holland and his K-9 partner Lido took over and were utilized primarily for: Narcotics, Tracking, Evidence retrieval, High-risk building searches, and Search and Rescue. K-9 Lido retired in 2022.
