The Chowan County Sheriff’s duties encompass more than just the Sheriff’s Office, it also includes Chowan Central Communications and the Chowan County Detention Facility. Employment opportunities are filled on an as needed basis, and applications are always accepted.
Deputy Sheriff

Deputy Sheriffs patrol the county to include residential and business areas. All deputies work closely with other emergency personnel in Chowan County. Their main responsibilities include; answering calls for service, criminal investigations, criminal process service, civil process service, transporting inmates, and court security.
Applicants must be at least 21 years of age, possess a valid NC driver’s license, able to work rotating shifts, be able to pass a background
investigation as required by NC Sheriff’s Training and Standards, as well as other requirements for BLET and Sheriff Standards (more information provided through the application process).

Detention Center (Jailer)

The Chowan County Detention Center is a division of the Chowan County Sheriff’s Office and provides care maintenance and security of sentenced and non-sentenced inmates from Chowan and Gates counties. The facility also houses inmates from other jurisdictions as requested.
You must be 21 years of age, possess a High School diploma or equivalent, and be able to pass a background investigation as required by NC Sheriff’s Training and Standards.
Individuals interested in employment with the jail may submit a county application and return it to the Sheriff’s Office.
Telecommunicator (911 Dispatch)

Primary duties consist of performing technical work on an assigned shift receiving and dispatching emergency and non-emergency calls for service, monitoring radios for law enforcement, fire, emergency medical services, other related equipment/personnel and other necessary duties as required for communications.
You must be 21 years of age, possess a High School diploma or equivalent, able to work rotating shifts and be able to pass a background investigation as required by NC Sheriff’s Training and Standards.
